A variety of history and hands-on science experiences await you at the Fort Collins Museum & Discovery Science Center. You'll run into a few places where it's hard to tell the two apart!

While you're here, don't forget to explore our outdoor Heritage Courtyard, too.

history floods fort collins

Many tales begin with a catastrophic event ... and so the tale of Fort Collins begins with a flood. Not just floods of water, but floods of people, floods of technology, and floods of memories. Experience the flood that is Fort Collins.

discovery zone science exhibits

Enjoy a wide range of interactive science exhibits to ignite your curiosity and make learning fun for the entire family. Dinosaurs, optics, physics and more all come alive as you learn basic principles of science, have fun, and get smarter!

In the Discovery Zone you'll also find Slinky, our wonderful ball python. You can follow Slinky on Twitter for a python's-eye view of what's going on at the Museum.

the discovery!

In 1924, amateur archaeologists Roy and Claude Coffin found something amazing on the rolling prairie north of Fort Collins. Excavated by the Smithsonian and the Colorado Natural History Museum, the site the Coffins found -- the Lindenmeier Archaeological Site -- became the "smoking gun" that proved humans had lived on this continent for at least 10,500 years. Learn about the Lindenmeier Archaeological Site -- still the most extensive Folsom-complex site known -- and see the largest selection of Lindenmeier artifacts outside the Smithsonian Institution.

In celebration of the opening of the Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, the City of Fort Collins' newest natural area which also includes the Lindenmeier Archaeological Site, we've added more artifacts to the exhibit and created an opportunity for visitors to leave their thoughts about the stories that a place can tell.

bright ideas

In our lobby, you'll encounter "Bright Ideas," a look at how the science and history of electricity has changed life in Fort Collins. Experience the historic evolution of the incandescent bulb in this interactive exhibit, experiment with the electrical conductivity of the human body at the plasma wall, and learn how electricity changed everything from hair curling to transportation in early Fort Collins.
