The digital dome theater planned for the new museum is an immersive, large format 360 degree theater. Using digital video and audio technology, the theater will feature interactive educational shows, planetarium-style experiences, and movies that explore a wide range of science, history, and cultural subjects.

The digital dome theater will be an invaluable civic resource. As an educational tool for our kids, its possibilities are endless. Inspiring a sense of wonder in all of us, the space will also be available for special events, lectures, and presentations.

What sorts of things will the digital dome do? There’s a great catalog of movies available, designed for the 360 degree environment. Many of these shows are about astronomical subjects, a reflection of the digital dome’s roots in the world of planetariums. But there are also shows about extreme weather, ancient sea creatures, the African Serengeti — just to name a few — a wide variety of subjects, with new shows being produced all the time.

A digital dome theater will also allow our Education staff to do live, interactive science presentations, literally zooming through the Universe to land on Mars or to explore the heart of the galaxy.

We're also excited about the potential of using the dome for live music and theater events in partnership with community arts groups, after hours shows (U2, Rock on Demand), and virtual tours of the natural and cultural treasures of the world through immersive panoramic photography. The possibilities are endless!
